A 12 year old boy in is accused of sexually assaulting a three year old girl in Lawrence County. The alleged attack took place last month. Lawrence County Captain Tim McWhorter stresses the difficulty of a situation like this where it is two children involved, especially with a victim under the age of five, because it becomes much more difficult for the victim to articulate what has happened. In such a case, the Sheriff's Department works very closely with the Department of Human Resources. Lawrence County DHR Director Tyron Newton said that if the accused attacker was 14 years old, a report would have been filed and the name sent to the central registry. The boy is charged with First Degree Sexual Abuse and will haev a hearing in juvenile court next month.
