The former Alabama Oil Company building was in flames at 2:30 pm Saturday, but the fire was contained within the hour. Building owner Herbert Johnson said that he noticed early in the day Saturday that a section of chain link fence had been cut. He left to run errands in Muscle Shoals and was notified 45 minutes later by his wife that the building was on fire. Sheffield fFire Department requested help from Muscle Shoals and Tuscumbia Fire Departments because of Saturday's extreme heat. The Oil Company has been closed for about 10 -15 years, and the metal building built in the 1940's now houses Johnson's antique cars. The center office and two rooms were damaged on the west section of the building, but a wall blocked smoke damage to the antique cars. Johnson suspects arson. |
