47 year old James Walter McMahill has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and felony attempting to elude , according to Lauderdale County officials. He is accused of holding his former girlfriend against her will and nearly beating her to death. The woman's family notified the sheriff's department that they had not seen her since Wednesday afternoon. Investigators went to McMahill's residence in the St Florian area and found McMahill in a vehicle with the victim. The woman tried to escape when she saw the investigators arrive, but was shoved back into the vehicle by McMahill and a chase ensued. The chase ended back at McMahill's residence and he was taken into custody. The woman was taken from the scene by an ambulance, and recovering at ECM Hospital. McMahill is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bail since he was on probation from the protection-from-abuse order.
