Dangerous Stretch of Alabama 17 Claims Life

A small pickup truck left the roadway on Alabama 17 and crashed about seven miles north of Florence near Zip City. The wreck occurred at 1:40 pm on Saturday and 41 year old Johnny Pitts was transported to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital where he later died from injuries sustained during the wreck. Pitts was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of teh accident. Emergency workers from the scene said that the vehicle left the east side of the road and became airborne, flipping at least once. The location of the accident on Alabama 17 is often called "dead man's curve" because a sharp "S" Curve is easily hidden between two straight stretches of roadway. Pitts became the ninth person to die in the Shoals/Southern Tennessee area from traffic-related accidents this month.
