Former Tuscumbia Police Chief Will Run For Mayor

Former Tuscumbia Police Chief Wayne Burns has announced that he plans to run for the mayor's position in the August 26 city elections. Burns served for 35 years on the Tuscumbia police force, 20 of those years as chief. He said that, if elected, he would focus on cummunication, especially with the city council, whom he feels should play a strong role in city goverment. He added that he would also work to bring in businesses to occupy vacant buildings downtown. Burns was born and raised in Tuscumbia, and is a disabled veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. While incumbent mayor Bill Shoemaker has not announced whetehr he will run for a second term, others have announced their interest in the position. Among those are Randy Stone, frozen food manager at Foodland in Tuscumbia, and Wade Gann, who was mayor from 2000 to 2004. |
