Hearing Begins Concerning Deadly Accident In Wilson Lake

A U.S. Coast Gaurd hearing has begun as part of a report that the agency is making on the fatal collision between a barge towing tugboat and a pleasure vessel on Wilson Lake March 27. Captain Joe M. Johnson testified that the 32 foot pleasure boat cut into the path of the front of the two barges and that he attempted to get the attention of the vessel's operator with a navigation light but got no response. The accident reulted in the deaths of Hamilton residents Mary Hood, 54, Ray Peters, 53, and Patti Jo Manley, 50, as well as 59-year-old Sheffield resident William Hill Jr. Witnesses in the hearing will be questioned by attorneys representing several different interests, including some of the victims' estates, as well as Johnson and Maryland Marine Services, which has ownership of the tugboat. He said it took about four seconds to see the boat in the water after seeing the blip on the radar, and maybe a second to turn the light on to the vessel. The boat rolled under the barge within about three seconds after that, he said. He added that the pleasure boat was running without navigation lights. Investigating officer Coast Guard Lt. Commander Eric Denley said it not yet known how long the process will take before the final report is released to the public.
