Railroad Relocation Considered Again

The railroad relocation issue concerning the Norfolk Southern Railroad that bissects Muscle Shoals and Sheffield has been in discussion for almost ten years. A new estimate from a Birmingham engineering firm puts the cost of relocation at $76.7 million, which is nearly $50 million more than an estimate in 2000. There are many issues besides funding that have kept the relocation project off the table including lack of community support. The issue was set aside for some time when a proposals for underpasses and overpasses fell short due to discoveries of historic structures in the area outlined for the overpass. The underpasses were too expensive to build. The relocation project is back in the spotlight because of the increased usage from the business of the railcar plant in Barton and the announcement of a large improvement project on behalf of Norfolk Southern Railroads.
