Restrictions Remain On Largemouth Bass Consumption
Bear Creek Resevoir in Franklin County is on a list of lakes in Alabama where fish have been detected that contain mercury. The Alabama Department of Public Health said that they are not telling people to stop eating fish, but the 670 acre lake still has a limited consumption advisory. This means children under the age of fifteen and women who are of child bearing age should not eat the fish from the lake, and some teenagers and other adults should limit their fish intake from the lake to once a month. Two fish have been caught since 2006 that had low levels of mercury contamination. No other fish have been added to the list besides the largemouth bass. State Toxicologist Neil Sass encourages people to consume fish discerningly and not to consume larger fish because they are oldest and may carry the largest amounts of contaminates.
