Sheffield Man Accused Of Assaulting Police Officer

46 year old Gary Tyrone Montgomery, of Sheffield, has been accused of assaulting a police officer during a routine traffic stop.A local man is accused of assaulting a police officer during a routine traffic stop. The incident began when officer Wesley Tidwell stopped a vehicla driven by Montgomery on South Columbia Avenue. Sgt Steve Guthriesaid that Montgomery gave Tidwell a fake name and, as Tidwell was talking with him, he broke away and ran. Tidwell chased Montgomery for two blocks before losing sight and returning to his car, then spotted Montgomery again and was able to catch him. Montgomery is accused of taking several swings at Tidwell as Tidwell was attempting to arrest him. Officer Phil Saruk, who was responding to back up Tidwell, was able to take Montgomery into custody without further incident. Tidwell was treated and released at Helen keller hospital and remains off work from an injury he sustained during the scuffle. Montgomery is being held in the Colbert County Jail on bail totaling $5,000.
