Sheffield Mayoral Candidates Meet For Roundtable Discussion

Candidates in the upcoming Sheffield Mayoral Election sat down at Pam's restaurant on Montgomery Avenue for their roundtable discussion hosted by Newstalk Am 1590 WVNA. Current Mayor Billy Don Anderson, Former Mayor Ian Sanford, and local businessman Steve Price discussed pertinent issues Tuesday night, but all area ready to improve Sheffield's position in the Shoals area. Anderson seeks to use a series of grants for redevelopment of downtown in order to attract businesses to the city.

Former Mayor Ian Sanford said that the key to improving the city is revenue. He emphasizes that a beautification project will not bring in revenue on its own. He is also intersted in developing an entertainment district in downtown Sheffield. Price would like to focus on redevelopment, begin establishing volunteer groups that would help clean up the city, and he would like to bring more residents into the governmental process. The candidates also discussed consolidation of some city services, most likely with Tuscumbia. Anderson is certain that consolidating such city services as police, fire, sanitation and school systems would save both cities valuable money. The live podcast will be available beginning Wednesday on newstalkWVNA.com.
